GamePro’s Most Anticipated Games of E3 2008

I can’t take this E3 anticipation anymore. Nintendo fans have a lot to look forward to, both in third party support and unnamed first party titles. The excitement always builds around E3, but this year, things seem to be bigger than ever. Are we ready for major disappointment or a pile of titles to be excited about?!

Rayman Raving Rabbids TV Party - preview

Rayman Raving Rabbids TV Party is one of the few mini-game collections that I am looking forward to. I love the Rabbids, and I think the mini-games in the series thus far have been pretty fun. The inclusion of the balance board as a main method of control is a great way to expand the horizons of the series, and also make you look even more like an idiot. You thought the Wii alone made you look stupid…

Skate It - hands/feet on

I fell out of the Tony Hawk craze a long time ago, and I think more and more people are feeling the same way. EA took advantage of that, and stepped in with Skate, their fresh approach to the genre. Now, we are getting a chance to Skate It on Wii and DS. Balance board support for a skateboard game seems like a match made in heaven. The good news is, early impressions are coming with a heaping helping of praise.

MadWorld - preview

MadWorld has already made a big splash with gamers, but I’m sure that the title will make even more waves at E3. No doubt, more blood, guts, violence, and ‘wacky’ comedy will be shown off, Perhaps some more press will get the time to try the game out for themselves. I know that I’ll be keeping a close eye on the project. The game has a very Killer7 approach to it, even if it is a lot more humourous.

UFC light heavyweight championship: Forrest Griffin def. Quinton Jackon, unanimous decision, to win title
Judges scores: Adalaide Byrd 48-46, Nelson Hamilton 48-46, Roy Silbert 49-46
Y! Sports scores: Kevin Iole scores it 48-46 Griffin; Dave Meltzer and Dave Doyle score it a 47-47 draw.

Round 1: Crowd is deafening and very much pro-Griffin as the fight begins. Griffin starts with a few low kicks. Jackson misses a right uppercut. Griffin’s punches are coming up short as crowd roars his name. Griffin lands a right to the head. Griffin lands a right inside. Griffin connects with a low kick. Griffin is setting the pace. Left to the chin by Jackson backs up Griffin. It probably didn’t land fully. Left and a right by Jackson. Griffin kicking a lot, mostly at Jackson’s legs. Hard combination by Jackson wobbles Griffin. Griffin backs up Jackson with a combination and a kick. They clinch on the cage. Jackson’s having trouble moving from the kicks. Left leg seems to be bothering him. Right uppercut from Jackson knocks Griffin down. Jackson lands several hard shots as Griffin is working his way up. Griffin lands two good knees to the midsection. Crowd is roaring as the round ends. Jackson’s round, 10-9

Round 2: Kick to leg really hrts Jackson. He may not be able to last. Griffin lands a few knees and takes Jackson down. Jackson is in big trouble because he can’t move on his left leg. Griffin is in half guard and firing a couple of elbows. Jackson is doing nothing as Griffin moves to side control. Griffin is going for an arm bar, but Jackson gets out. Griffin is still in a dominant position. Griffin throws a few rights to the head. Many in the crowd are standing. Griffin gets mount. Jackson could be in deep trouble. Griffin throwing more elbows as the crowd roars its encouragement. Griffin’s round, 10-8

Round 3: Jackson is walking a little better than he was earlier. They trade inside, but Griffin dances away from trouble. One good kick to the leg and Jackson will likely be in big trouble and in danger of being stopped. Griffin kicking at the leg. Jackson blocks a high kick with his forearm. Jackson lands a left. Griffin lands a low kick. Griffin is dancing away as Jackson charges in. They clinch as the bell sounds. Griffin’s round, 10-9 – Kevin Iole

Middleweights: Patrick Cote (14-4) def. Ricardo Almeida (9-3)
How: Split decision
Judges scores: 29-28, 28-29, 29-28
Yahoo! Sports score: 29-28 Cote
Key moment: A close fight with Cote winning rounds two and three as Almeida seemed to tire after the first round. The difference in the third round was low kicks thrown by Cote and a punching edge. Little happened in the second round which Cote won with a knockdown with seconds left.
Analysis: This match did nothing positive for either man’s career and was easily the worst match of the show. Dana White had talked of the winner getting a shot at Anderson Silva’s title, but after this match it’s going to take a great job of promotion to garner even the slightest bit of interest in Silva vs. Cote. – Dave Meltzer
Lightweights: Joe Stevenson (34-8) def. Gleison Tibau (27-5)
How: Guillotine choke at 2:57 of the second round
Key moment: Stevenson went for the guillotine as Tibau shot in for a takedown. He had Tibau’s arm locked in and the submission came quickly.
Analysis: Stevenson was dominated by B.J. Penn in his last bout in a fight for the UFC lightweight title. He wants another crack at the belt and needs to string together a series of victories over high-level opponents. The American Top Team’s Tibau was a tough match and gave him several scary moments, but Stevenson put his signature on the win with the guillotine. – Kevin Iole
Welterweights: Josh Koscheck (13-2) def. Chris Lytle (35-16-4)
How: Unanimous decision
Judges scores: 30-26, 29-27, 30-28
Yahoo! Sports score: 30-26
Key moment: Not really a “moment,” but Koscheck’s wrestling proved to be the difference. In all three rounds he was able to take Lytle down and used elbows from the top to do major damage. Lytle’s face was the proverbial crimson mask, with cuts over both eyes, but the right side was bleeding to the point that as Koscheck moved him around the mat, there was a thick blood streak charting where Lytle had been. Lytle hung in and started connecting with serious punches as the third round ended.
Analysis: Koscheck’s wrestling remained hard to stop, as with the exception of last year’s loss to Georges St. Pierre, he remains unstoppable at welterweight. He also remains one of the most disliked fighters in the organization from fans, who after three years, still haven’t forgotten his antics on The Ultimate Fighter season one. – Dave Meltzer
Former UFC light heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz and girlfriend Jenna Jameson made it a point to stroll cageside and down through the crowd toward the exit between the first and second rounds of the Josh Koscheck-Chris Lytle fight. The pair didn’t get nearly the level of crowd response they were likely anticipating.
Lightweights: Tyson Griffin (12-1) def. Marcus Aurelio (16-6)
How: Unanimous decision
Judges scores: 30-27, 30-27, 30-27
Yahoo! Sports score: 30-27 Griffin
Key moment: In what has become a pattern, Griffin paced his way to a methodical win in which he wasn’t really threatened nor came close to finishing his foe.
Analysis: The win marked the fourth consecutive decision victory for Griffin since he was manhandled by Frank Edgar at UFC 67. The Extreme Couture fighter has put together a string of patient, safe performances against several similar level foes and has reached the point where the UFC should test him against higher-caliber competition. Aurelio, who came over from PRIDE with a big reputation, simply hasn’t been able to get untracked in the UFC. – Dave Doyle
Heavyweights: Gabriel Gonzaga (9-3) def. Justin McCulley (8-4-2).
How: Submission via Kimura at 1:57 of the first round.
Key moment: The key blow was a sweeping low kick by Gonzaga that took McCulley off his feet. From that point it was classic jiu-jitsu as Gonzaga moved to a full mount and got the submission with an expertly applied Kimura.
Analysis: Gonzaga came in with something to prove coming off consecutive losses to Randy Couture and Fabricio Werdum. McCulley never got untracked and his UFC future at this point would be a question. – Dave Meltzer
Lightweights: Cole Miller (14-3) def. Jorge Gurgel (16-4)
How: Triangle choke at 4:44 of the third round
Key moment: Gurgel was in Miller’s guard and let his arm hang free. Miller took advantage and slapped on the triangle choke to record the most significant win of his career.
Analysis: An American Top Team purple belt, Miller advanced his career significantly by submitting a highly regarded Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt. A former competitor on The Ultimate Fighter, Miller’s win over the perennial gatekeeper at 155 pounds should move him nearer top competition in the division. – Kevin Iole
Lightweights: Melvin Guillard (40-8-3) def. Dennis Siver (11-6)
How: TKO at 0:36 of the first round
Key moment: Right from the start, Guillard decked and floored the German import. When both were back standing a few seconds later, Guillard got Siver coming in with a right cross that put him down hard. After a few hard punches on the ground, a couple of which bounced Siver’s head off the mat, ref Herb Dean stopped it.
Analysis: Guillard got back into the win column after a tough 2007 in which he was suspended for cocaine use and then lost a heated grudge match to Rich Clementi in his return. Guillard connected with two hard punches that both put Siver on the deck. Siver was done after the second punch standing. Guillard is the early leader for KO of the night bonus. – Dave Meltzer
Lightweights: Justin Buchholz (9-2) def. Corey Hill (2-1)
How: Rear naked choke at 3:57 of the second round
Key moment: Buccholz had been taking a lot of punishment but landed a kick to the jaw that knocked Hill down early in the second round.
Analysis: A protégé of WEC featherweight champion Urijah Faber, Buccholz had difficulty getting inside on the 6-foot-4 Hill, but he began to use his kicks in the second round that opened Hill up for the fight-finishing choke. – Kevin Iole
Former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir is sitting ringside at UFC 86 with his wife, sporting a new hairdo. Mir, who is known for his curly locks, has shaved his head and is wearing a five o’clock shadow on top.

Mir is one of the coaches on Season 8 of The Ultimate Fighter and speculation has begun that Mir’s hairdo is a result of something that occurred on the show.

Filming concluded last week and the season will begin airing on Spike TV in September.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed

Platforms: Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, PS2, DS, PSP

Genre: Action

Release Date: September 16

Give in to the lure of the Dark Side in the next major Star Wars game. You'll take on the role of Darth Vader's secret Sith apprentice, Starkiller, running mysterious errands for the Jedi Lord while wielding incredibly destructive Force powers.

Why It's Hot: It's the missing link. Set between the end of Episode III and the beginning of Episode IV, The Force Unleashed sees Starkiller tracking down the few Jedi who lived through Emperor Palpatine's Jedi purge, lending new insight into Vader's relationship with the Emperor and functioning as a sort of bridge between the two film trilogies. That's awesome, and so is the game's tech. Thanks to a trio of cutting-edge technologies, you'll toss stormtroopers, rebel soldiers and even entire Tie-Fighters around like ragdolls, turning the galaxy far, far, away into your personal Jedi stomping ground.

Why It's Not: Think this is your chance to bust out your spot-on Star Wars kid imitation by waving your Wiimote around like a lightsaber? Not quite, padawan. Though you'll be able to swing your sword using gestures, The Force Unleashed is not a saber simulator. Another strike against the Wii version: it's being developed by a different studio (as is the DS and PSP) and isn't powered by the same fancy technology as the 360 and PS3 versions. The Force might not be with this one...

Mercenaries 2: World in Flames

Platforms: Xbox 360, PS3

Genre: Action

Release Date: August 31

No blood for oil? Yeah, right. Take to the jungles of Venezuela as a mercenary-for-hire in this hard-hitting, free-roaming action bonanza. A political coup sparked by a crazed, oil-rich tyrant has turned the country into a war-zone, which means plenty of opportunities for career advancement.

Why It's Hot: Combining the open-world antics of Grand Theft Auto with the immense firepower of a small army, the first Mercenaries was a runaway hit on the PS2 and Xbox. This sequel is being developed by the same core team at original developer Pandemic Studios -- always a good sign -- and if our hands-on time was any indication, it sure looks like bigger, stupider fun than ever before.

Why It's Not: At its worst, "open-world gaming" also means "unfocused tech-demo." It isn't easy giving gamers the freedom to do anything while forcing them to follow a story. Pandemic has pulled it off before, but can they do it again?

Battlefield: Bad Company

Platforms: Xbox 360, PS3

Genre: First-person shooter

Release Date: June 25

Help the morally-ambiguous squad of Bad Company score some serious loot by doing a little private recon in an Eastern European country. Fully-destructible environments and a legitimate single-player campaign breathe new life into an old battlefield.

Why It's Hot: Combine the open-ended beauty of Battlefield with the ability to blow up pretty much everything and you get a game that's truly hard to dislike. Though the franchise isn't known for its single-player campaigns, Bad Company has been lauded for its fun, quirky solo mode. With massive maps supporting up to 24 simultaneous players, its multiplayer ain't too shabby, either.

Why It's Not: It's one thing to deliver a decent single-player game, but it's another entirely to craft smart bad guys: the enemy A.I. is a bit dodgy, to put it mildly.

Beijing 2008

Platforms: Xbox 360, PS3, PC

Genre: Sports

Release Date: July 8

Bring home the gold in the official game based on the Beijing Summer Games. Organize your daily schedule and customize your national team as you compete in a wealth of events.

Why It's Hot: It's big, that's for sure. Where past Olympic video games featured perhaps a dozen or so events, Beijing 2008 offers a hefty 38, including less obvious choices like Judo and Kayaking. The ability to play online matches could actually make it feel a little more like the real thing. Plus, it's roughly $1200 cheaper than hopping a flight to China.

Why It's Not: Name the last truly great game based on the Summer Olympics. If you blurted out Track & Field, you get a medal (Epyx's Summer Games would have counted, too.) Unfortunately, those both came out just in time to celebrate the L.A. Olympics in 1984; in the twenty-five years since, it's been one Olympics video game disaster after another. That's not a good track record.

Guitar Hero: On Tour

Platform: DS

Genre: Music Rhythm

Release Date: June 22

Rock it in your pocket with the first portable version of the groundbreaking music game. Featuring an innovative Guitar Grip attachment and all the gameplay from its console cousins, On Tour delivers a very big sound in a very small package.

Why It's Hot: What's not to like? It's Guitar Hero on the go! The Guitar Grip puts your fingers right on the frets, while the built-in guitar pick stylus lets you strum the touch screen like a real guitar. Most of the game's 25 licensed songs are master tracks, not covers -- and best of all, the thing works.

Why It's Not: What's not to like? Uh, a few things, if you believe the mixed reviews. Some critics feel the Guitar Grip isn't particularly comfy, while other have complained about the sound quality and how the relatively short set list skews too heavily towards popular music rather than rock classics. No one said rock 'n roll was easy.

California wildfires strain state's resources

LOS ANGELES - A wildfire threatening thousands of homes in Southern California spread slowly through scenic canyonlands Saturday, straining resources as crews struggled to contain hundreds of other blazes around the state.

"The firefighters are stretched thin, they are exhausted," and some have gone days without sleep, said Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who visited a command post in Santa Barbara County.

A slew of wildfires, most ignited by lightning two weeks ago, has burned more than 800 square miles of land throughout California. The blazes have destroyed at least 69 homes and other buildings and contributed to the death of a firefighter who suffered a heart attack while digging fire lines.

About 1,400 fires have been contained, but more than 330 still burned out of control Saturday.

Schwarzenegger said the state's top priority was in the coastal region of Santa Barbara County, where nearly 2,700 homes were threatened by a four-day-old fire in the Los Padres National Forest that has consumed about 13 square miles.

Cooler, moist air Saturday kept the fire sluggish and helped firefighters trying to surround it, said Pat Wheatley, county spokeswoman. Evening fell without the return of the late afternoon "sundowner" winds that had sent flames racing up to homes on Friday evening, she said.

"We've been pleased by some cooperative weather," Wheatley said. "The 'sundowners' that we were afraid could happen did not happen much tonight so that gave us an opportunity to fight the fire without fighting the winds."

The fire was 24 percent contained, she said.

More than 2,600 homes were under mandatory evacuation Saturday, and residents in another 1,400 were warned to be ready to flee if the flames gathered speed.

Wheatley said the mandatory evacuation orders were partially lifted later Saturday, allowing many residents to return home, but she did not know how many homes were affected.

The fire, which was burning in 15-foot-high, half-century-old chaparral, still had the potential to roll through a hilly area of ranches, housing tracts and orchards between the town of Goleta and Santa Barbara, keeping firefighters on their toes.

"They're feeling very good about this, but they are not taking this fire lightly at all," Wheatley said.

Temperatures were expected to dip to around 60 degrees in the area overnight, but were forecast to reach the mid-70s on Sunday.

Nearly 1,200 firefighters struggled to surround the blaze while a DC-10 air tanker and other aircraft dumped water and fire retardant along ridges and in steep canyons.

Investigators think the fire, which began Tuesday, was human-caused. The U.S. Forest Service on Saturday asked for public help in determining who set it and whether it was sparked accidentally or on purpose.

Meanwhile, cooler weather helped crews attacking a two-week-old blaze that has destroyed 22 homes in Big Sur, at the northern end of the Los Padres forest, but the fire continued to grow slowly on all flanks Saturday night.

The fire, which had blackened more than 110 square miles, was only 5 percent contained with full containment not expected until the end of the month, but morning fog that moved in from the sea helped prevent it from advancing on Big Sur's famed restaurants and hotels.

"We're gaining ground, but we're nowhere near being done," said Gregg DeNitto, a spokesman for the U.S. Forest Service. "There's still a lot of potential out there. The fire has been less active the last couple of days. We've had favorable weather; they are taking every opportunity to get some line on it."

But the weather was expected to become hotter and drier over the next couple of days, he said, with winds and temperatures rising and humidity dropping.

"The fire still has the potential for movement and the potential to get out of our containment lines," he said.

A homeowner near Big Sur was arrested Friday after officials said he refused orders to stop setting his own backfires.

The governor noted that he recently ordered 400 National Guard troops to be trained in wildfire fighting so they could help fight the state's blazes. He also urged lawmakers to adopt his budget plan for a $70 million emergency surcharge on home and business insurance policies to buy more firefighting equipment.

California now has a year-round fire season and needs the money from the fee, which should cost the average homeowner about $1 a month, Schwarzenegger said.

Meanwhile, residents of Crown King, Ariz., who had left their homes for nearly a week because of a wildfire were allowed to return Saturday night. A thunderstorm that drenched the area Friday evening helped fire crews working to get a line around the blaze, which consumed more than 15 square miles of forest.

Yahoo’s top 12 games of Summer

Writing lists about games to play in the Summer seems to be like the hot topic right now! Castle of Shikigami III - review

When you look past the flashy presentation, you’ll realize that this game is simply a decent, fun, and challenging vertical shooter. Nothing more, nothing less. It’s up to you if you want to indulge in what it has to offer, be it the insanely tough gameplay or the ludicrous translation. But if all else fails, it can teach you one thing: Laughing out loud is the basic trait of an International Ninja. Think about it.

PC Addiction vs. Console Addiction

There’s no doubt that you can become addicted to both PC and console gaming. People have been known to lose days of their lives glued to the glow of a monitor or TV screen. Having said that, just which platform can get a tighter hold on you? I would have to argue that the PC has the worst addictive nature, considering the constant connection to the internet that you have. Sure, you can play online with other consoles, but the PC is open to so much more in the online world. Either way…don’t get sucked in!
